Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The frequency bands used for satellite communication, commonly designated as L, S, C, X, Ku, and Ka-band, are chosen based on a key trade-off: lower frequencies (like C-band) offer high reliability and resistance to rain fade, while higher frequencies (like Ka-band) provide greater bandwidth for high-speed data but are more susceptible to weather interference. Telstra International’s teleports and Telstra InfraCo’s satellite ground station infrastructure enables access to multiple C, Ku and Ka-band frequencies across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and Pacific Ocean Region (POR).

A teleport is a secure ground-based facility that connects satellite signals to terrestrial networks, offering uplink/downlink, media delivery and data services. While a satellite ground station provides the physical link to space, a teleport integrates multiple antennas, redundant power and high-capacity infrastructure to support global connectivity, carrier-grade services and enterprise-grade reliability.

Telstra International’s teleports stand out for their carrier-grade infrastructure, secure facilities and integration with terrestrial networks. They support multiple frequency bands, offer redundant power and cooling and are monitored 24/7 by satellite engineers. This ensures high reliability, scalability and global reach for enterprise, media, carrier and mobility services. Key services include uplink, downlink, and turnaround for satellite signals; global IP transport and backhaul services for secure data and internet connectivity; and managed services such as co-location, equipment hosting, disaster recovery and 24/7 network operations centre (NOC) monitoring.

The key benefits of using satellite telehousing or co-location services stem from leveraging a specialised, ready-made infrastructure to meet the rigorous demands of satellite communication. These services combine the core advantages of enterprise-grade data centres with direct access to a global satellite network. It provides high reliability and uptime, cost efficiency through shared resources and a shift from CapEx to OpEx, direct satellite connectivity and the assurances of security, redundancy and compliance.

A Virtual Network Operator (VNO) can manage satellite capacity through a leasing and network partitioning model, even though they do not own the satellite or the main ground infrastructure (the teleport/hub). By using Telstra-supplied modems authenticated to access the Iterra IP Satellite network, VNO allows control over bandwidth, spot beams and uplink/downlink scheduling, ensuring secure and tailored connectivity.
